How to Build the playit.gg Binary on Intel Mac and Use It with SquidServers

Guide to compile the playit.gg binary for Intel macOS

Need a fresh playit.gg binary for your Intel Mac? This guide shows how to build the binary from source using Rust, confirm it’s the right CPU architecture, and then plug it into SquidServers.

Steps overview:

  • Install Rust and its toolchain
  • Clone the playit-agent repository
  • Build a release binary
  • Replace the bundled SquidServers version

What You Will Need

  • macOS on Intel
  • Xcode Command Line Tools
xcode-select --install
  • Internet access to download Rust + repo

1) Clone the playit.gg Repository

git clone https://github.com/playit-cloud/playit-agent
cd playit-agent

Check the README if unsure about branches.

2) Install Rust and Cargo

Rustup installs the Rust compiler and Cargo build tool:

curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh

Load Cargo for the current session:

source $HOME/.cargo/env

Optional: add to your shell profile

echo 'source $HOME/.cargo/env' >> ~/.zshrc # or ~/.bash_profile

3) Build the playit Binary

cargo build --release

Cargo will compile a tuned executable.

4) Locate the Binary

./target/release/playit-cli

Make sure it’s executable:

chmod +x ./target/release/playit-cli

5) Verify Intel x86_64 Architecture

file ./target/release/playit-cli

You should see x86_64 in output.

Check it runs:

./target/release/playit-cli --help

6) Replace SquidServers’ Bundled Binary

Find the existing playit inside SquidServers. Then rename your build:

mv ./target/release/playit-cli playit

Make sure executable permission remains:

chmod +x playit

Replace the original playit file inside SquidServers.

Restart SquidServers and launch a server, you are now tunneling with your new build!

Troubleshooting

  • Cargo not found → run:
source $HOME/.cargo/env
  • Build missing tools → install:
xcode-select --install
cargo build --release
  • SquidServers still using old binary?
    • Wrong file replaced?
    • Missing execute bit?
    • Restart SquidServers
chmod +x playit

Quick Reference

# Clone
git clone https://github.com/playit-cloud/playit-agent
cd playit-agent

# Install Rust
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh
source $HOME/.cargo/env

# Build
cargo build --release

# Verify + Run
file ./target/release/playit-cli
./target/release/playit-cli --version

# Replace in SquidServers
mv ./target/release/playit-cli playit
chmod +x playit
# Then copy "playit" over the original file in SquidServers
